<br />
I`ve made a new summer dress - flowy soft rayon in a loose comfy style . Just tell that to our current weather . While WA melts , NSW burns , parts of Queensland is getting mega hail stones and severe droughts we are still getting very cool and wet weather . I`m not complaining though .<br />
This is dress 120 from April 2019 Burda , a ripper of an issue . I love so many styles in this magazine and this dress wasn`t even one of them but I fell in love with it when I saw a couple of great versions on the internet .<br />
<br />

<br />
It is a loose fitting button front dress with dropped shoulders , low placed waist seam and ruffled hems and sleeves . It turns out I am a partial ruffle person - love the hem ruffles but not the sleeves so obviously I didn`t add them which turned out to be an extra bonus later on .<br />
This dress is an easy sew but Burda was not very clear on adding the ruffles to the hems - you do need to set the gathered ruffled portion back from the front bands ( which are not sewn on separately ) . I didn`t set mine back far enough so my front ruffle side seam does not meet the side seam of the dress but I`m not fussed about these kind of things ( if I was then there would be very few clothes in my wardrobe ) . The dress really is loose fitting and needs a belt to give it any shape.<br />

The fabric is from Spotty - a rayon called Garden Tea Party . I was lucky and bought the last of the roll which was about 4 metres . I managed to cut out my dress from about 2.5 metres so had enough leftover to make a pair of short PJs for youngest DD who thought the fabric was really pretty too. ( so no chance of our wearing matching mother - daughter outfits ). It is a bit slippery to work with and can stretch out too but the soft , cool feel and the heaps of great prints outweigh that .<br />
I know the super hot weather is about to hit us too but I think I`ll be a prepared as I can in this dress. Highly recommend .<br />

<br />
For no particular reason my next sewing project was a two piece dress using some fabric bought on a whim. It is described as a ponte with navy blue roses on a pale pink background. I wasn`t sure about the fabric when I received it ( the risks of online buying ) but I'm always willing to give it a try because sometimes the end result can exceed my expectations and it certainly did this time.<br />
<img alt="Floral printed ponte - dusty pink/navy" src="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1012/4392/products/20150409_140657_200x200.jpg?v=1519941028" /><br />
I used an old favourite pattern Simplicity 4074 for the skirt and tried an old Burda WOF pattern 03/2005 which I have wanted to sew for over 12 years . Definitely better late than never because I love it and I think I will be sewing a summer version.<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
Simplicity 4074 is a classic pattern which I`ve made several times now , the skirt twice and the faux wrap dress once . Luckily the first time I made the skirt I was bothered to lengthen the skirt at the proper lengthen/ shorten lines so it was a very easy matter to cut and sew the slightly flared elastic waist style.<br />
The knit T pattern comes in two versions . A short sleeve, tie neck , hem band variation and long sleeves , simple V neck and no hem band so I made a combination of the two styles . The sleeves are a two piece design which fits nicely and I know it`s hard to see but I used the tie neck pattern.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nrIGQ3lr8LQ/XcEzB8r1jsI/AAAAAAAACik/trtV664vu4kR3VVoFl1uarrR6od2MTxGQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_7479.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="815" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nrIGQ3lr8LQ/XcEzB8r1jsI/AAAAAAAACik/trtV664vu4kR3VVoFl1uarrR6od2MTxGQCEwYBhgL/s640/IMG_7479.JPG" width="323" /></a></div>
<br />
The older style Burdas come with two large pattern sheets so even though there were more different styles back then there were fewer patterns per page so tracing was much easier. I even understood all the instructions this time ( miracle ) but stitched around the base of the V neck to prevent stretching which Burda doesn`t mention . <br />
Since the fabric was really easy to work with ( and I didn`t even have to stabilise the hems ) , this was an easy , satisfying , morale boosting project. I`ll mention that the ponte came from Janies Fabrics , a Melbourne based online fabric shop ( with a bricks and mortar shop as well which I`ve never managed to visit ) since it is still available . I`ve bought quite a few pieces from there now and usually I`ve been happy . Speaking of fabric shopping I went to Eliza`s in Sunshine last week. I`ve seen/ heard a few recommendations for it now and then read on Thornberry`s blog that it is closing. I thought I would regret not going so after an hours drive ( not even peak hour - how I hate you Melbourne traffic ) I thought I better buy something .<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zjfcy4CnO1c/XcE85tgQPBI/AAAAAAAACis/5s3Oa30uE-UWsEvAFCSwt1K0wPoCztsDACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_7487.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zjfcy4CnO1c/XcE85tgQPBI/AAAAAAAACis/5s3Oa30uE-UWsEvAFCSwt1K0wPoCztsDACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_7487.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
OK so ignore that the top and bottom pieces are not from Eliza`s . The green, blue and red are described as viscose spandex knits , the cream underneath is a textured poly knit and the plum under that is a wool / poly blend knit . All knits because my existing fabrics are overwhelmingly wovens .<br />
I`m not sure that I will get back to Eliza`s again but I`m now thinking there were a couple of other pieces I could have bought . For 5 pieces of fabric measuring over 8 metres I paid under $29 . Unbelievable and a soothing balm for the preceding city driving .<br />
My advice is to check out Eliza`s if you haven`t already and to save your old Burdas .<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cK3KciRrQRg/Xb0Vx0koZBI/AAAAAAAAChs/ojACJmU6SkkWwjy0YgJJa6YqaWyUTUgrQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_7488.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1142" data-original-width="1600" height="456" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cK3KciRrQRg/Xb0Vx0koZBI/AAAAAAAAChs/ojACJmU6SkkWwjy0YgJJa6YqaWyUTUgrQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_7488.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This is the fourth handbag I have now made , they are a bit addictive and fun to sew. I used Marcy Tilton`s pattern Vogue 8590 which I bought several years ago and some perfectly coordinated fabric which originally was in a kit to make placemats / pillowcases .<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sKC3v0jk68g/Xb0VnaLq2ZI/AAAAAAAACho/-T9smx7gSzIDZ360Z9DKD_xCuBDTwcCdwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_7492.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sKC3v0jk68g/Xb0VnaLq2ZI/AAAAAAAACho/-T9smx7gSzIDZ360Z9DKD_xCuBDTwcCdwCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/IMG_7492.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
I originally wanted to make view D with the double connected bags but after a previous Marcy Tilton bag making experience I realised that no matter how lovely the bags looked a pattern based on a two dimensional rectangle doesn`t create any useful carrying capacity so View B it was.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SLUKmTaFRek/Xb0V2dW7DPI/AAAAAAAAChw/ddmQ_0LOtBo4MYCRiV54LLyxoHITytoRACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_7489.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SLUKmTaFRek/Xb0V2dW7DPI/AAAAAAAAChw/ddmQ_0LOtBo4MYCRiV54LLyxoHITytoRACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_7489.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
View B which is the smaller tote has a gathered top created by inserting elastic in a channel and pockets on the ends. It includes an inner zipped pocket and an open pleated pocket . If there is one wisdom I have learnt from making bags it is that I need two inner zipped pockets so that is what I did.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gx9Trj4Ff8U/Xb0V3WCSpsI/AAAAAAAACh0/fJIzmy4pGjwGrZSPuAp7scAeqSy02BBtQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_7490.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gx9Trj4Ff8U/Xb0V3WCSpsI/AAAAAAAACh0/fJIzmy4pGjwGrZSPuAp7scAeqSy02BBtQCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/IMG_7490.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Like the last Marcy Tilton bag I made the pattern pieces are not labelled but included in a larger rectangle which labels the piece and how many you need to cut etc . Also the same pattern pieces are repeated multiple times . This is meant to help if you are using multiple different fabrics but overall I found this a bit confusing, not helped by having the flu and sciatica at the time of cutting. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
However the sewing directions were very good including for the inner zippered pockets . I was a bit worried about the elastic insertion but it wasn`t hard as long as there is enough room for your hand to get between the outer and inner handbag. The other change I made apart from adding a second zippered inner pocket inside was to add a magnetic clasp at the top . The bag has ties here but imagine doing and undoing ties to keep the bag top together . I know I would get sick of that quickly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e59y2QM-pjY/Xb0V44h5obI/AAAAAAAACh4/5u8zDmioHdwt3Lf_aF5apX_Mxub9jXfnwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_7491.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e59y2QM-pjY/Xb0V44h5obI/AAAAAAAACh4/5u8zDmioHdwt3Lf_aF5apX_Mxub9jXfnwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_7491.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used some cute vintage buttons to keep the outer end pockets a bit more secure . </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Where I live there is a dearth of sewing shops so I make do with alternative sources for my bag making . I line all the outer handbag pieces with leftover fleecy . It creates a padded more firmer feel but it is not stiff . I used one of my vintage belt making kits for the bag handles inserting the webbing into handles and then fusing them with a hot iron . The belt webbing is one metre and was the perfect length for the handles . I`m really pleased with the result so I will be buying these up whenever I see them from now on. I bought a cheap ugly old bag from the op shop and removed the magnetic clasp to re-use. There was a metal chain as well which I kept but the rest of the bag was discarded .</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I think this is the best bag I have made so next time I will be ready to use some favourite home decor fabric I have been saving . </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GrBt1zi-XjI/Xbex-KelbwI/AAAAAAAAChI/Uap-Jsc4MjUMG2fdXv3K3unksF4_dEDggCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B1015.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="425" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GrBt1zi-XjI/Xbex-KelbwI/AAAAAAAAChI/Uap-Jsc4MjUMG2fdXv3K3unksF4_dEDggCPcBGAYYCw/s640/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B1015.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was quite surprised to find this is the sixth Tilton pattern I have sewn . I know they are different companies and sisters but apart from the knit top in the middle of the upper row I have found some issues with all the patterns ( to be fair the twinset on the left bottom row just didn`t suit me) . I haven`t really encountered this before so it`s a bit disappointing. However overall I would recommend this version of this bag pattern. </div>

Scrap Habits , I can't help myself ! I keep almost all my scraps so this blouse has been years in the making . There are five different white remnants involved ranging from one to 25 years old. As a bonus I got to use some lovely vintage mother of pearl buttons which I have had for ages too.<br />
They were a perfect way to trial a new to me pattern , Butterick 5891 , a Katherine Tilton pattern as there are lots of smallish to medium sized pattern pieces .<br />
<br />

<br />
I really like the end result but it is worth checking other reviews as the pattern is not without issues. The main omission are missing stitching lines ( which create a kind of pleat ) on the right peplum pieces which didn`t bother me as I elected to leave the peplums plain. As others have noted the collar pieces are unfaced showing inner seams . It is simple to cut out a collar facing from the collar pattern if you prefer a clean finish . Also the pattern says to make buttonholes on the left front and sew the buttons on the right side ! Oops .<br />
Despite these errors it was fun sewing this shirt with all the details of the peplum and double collar .The instructions were very good ( except for the mistakes ! ) and it all came together really well. I was worried it would be very loose fitting and overly large but it isn`t at all .<br />

<br />
The back view is just as interesting as the front with a slanting hem line and peplum . ( And I'm really pleased with my little crab apple tree in the background which we only planted last year . Covering one of our water tanks in the background are some kiwi fruits hopefully to bear fruit soon . )<br />
<br />
Since coming home from our road trip to Townsville I have managed to sew up quite a bit. I loved our trip away although it is bit depressing to drive through severe drought affected areas which actually seemed like most of the country except Victoria . I did miss having a creative outlet so when I came back I hit the sewing machine hard finishing a new nightie out of very soft cotton lawn bought at an op shop in Montville Queensland and a pair of track pants since I haven't owned a pair for a couple of years and missed wearing them . I`ve also made a new handbag which I will review next time. <br />

<br />
This is the last of my main sewing projects I have to catch up on . This is a raglan sleeve cardigan from the Winter 2015 edition of Ottobre Woman. I used a fine , thin cream woollen knit which although was not difficult to work with , I was a bit worried about . I thought it might possibly unravel or stretch out so I handled it very very carefully .<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-88GKEkC6u80/XXm1LsACKjI/AAAAAAAACgM/B4ya8job_CMSJ4WhHI33E2TxWIgx7YzQACEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B1007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-88GKEkC6u80/XXm1LsACKjI/AAAAAAAACgM/B4ya8job_CMSJ4WhHI33E2TxWIgx7YzQACEwYBhgL/s400/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B1007.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I changed the pattern by doubling the size of the long rectangular band , then folding this in half rather than a single thickness band with a curled selvage front outer edge . I also eliminated the interesting pockets because I have never made this type before and I didn`t want to start on this fabric . If they went wrong it would muck up the whole cardigan . What I did follow on the instructions was to finish the seams and hems with a coverstitch type top stitch. I don`t own a coverstitch machine so I used one of the fancy stitches on my Pfaff . I carefully cut strips of tissue paper to stabilise under the seams before doing the stitching . Although the ` coverstitch ` is not obvious , the tissue paper made a big positive difference to how this went. The down side was carefully tearing away the tissue paper afterwards - a labour of love for sure.<br />
<br />

The cream cardigan turned out to be another good wearable basic which will hopefully see years of use.<br />
Apart from this I have made a pair of shorts and some pajamas for my daughters ( I don`t have any photos ). I also refashioned a Liberty lawn blouse my Mum gave me by changing the puffy sleeves to fitted sleeves with a slightly gathered elasticised hem . I am currently making up a Katherine Tilton shirt out of several scraps but I am having a holiday so completion of that will probably be a few weeks away.<br />

<br />
This top is about the second thing I made this year so my memories are a bit hazy about the process . What is not hazy is how much I love this fabric and the pattern. Some of my favourite fabrics are from the op shop and this is no exception and it only cost 50 cents. I love the small asymmetrically placed and shaped dots on the white crinkly fabric . There was only 1.2 metres but this was enough to give me some choices in pattern selection.<br />
I went with this simple button up , dropped shoulder sleeveless shirt from yet another European sewing magazine my daughter bought me. It is obviously French and includes lots of great patterns of all sizes. Each individual pattern comes in limited sizes though .<br />
I do remember changing the front facing which is part of the fronts and not a separate piece . The facing was only a narrow single fold type so I added the same width of the facing when cutting out the fronts so it could be a double fold facing ( does this make sense ? ) . This provides more support and looks neater inside .<br />

The top is very comfortable and I wore it on a fantastic 6 day holiday to Luganville, Vanuatu to visit my daughter ( she gets around for sure ! ) where it was quite humid at times . I am about to go to Townsville , Queensland ( to see another daughter !) as well so it will get good use up there too . I will definitely be using this magazine again at some time. <br />

<br />
When I made my grey woollen skirt earlier I was going to be lazy and not line it so I had made this petticoat to go under it . As it was I guilted myself into lining the skirt . However I have worn the petticoat heaps anyway. I used an apricot satin fabric with a hammered finish given to me years and years ago by my Mum. This fabric has survived a couple of close shaves in being donated and now I`m glad that I didn`t .<br />
I had enough fabric left over to make a matching camisole and one of the best parts of this whole project ( apart from stash busting an old fabric and making something totally useful ) was finally getting to use some beautiful vintage what I think you would describe as broderie anglaise. I have more leftover of this and another design and I have an idea on how to use some of this in an outer garment where others can see how lovely it is.<br />
I used two old New Look patterns to make my cami/ petticoat set. I used the pull on skirt minus the flounce on the right for the petticoat and the even older pattern on the left for the cami. I often use old patterns for my sewing since they don't seem much different anyway to newer ones being produced.<br />

<br />
I have also made several pairs of acacia undies, a free pattern from Megan Nielsen. They are very comfortable and the pattern is full size so it is easier to work out if it will fit onto various scrap knits. This year I have used old T shirts that were not donatabled but the fabric was still pretty good baring some minor staining in places. I have adjusted the elastic amounts on the legs as from memory they were too large . It is a win win being able to produce comfy underthings and reduce land fill and the purchase of new items. I look out for suitable lingerie elastic as this is something that really can`t be recycled.Janinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14384221374769122673noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8734794303611926264.post-56746985223111788692019-09-09T18:51:00.000-07:002019-09-09T18:51:11.428-07:00Vogue 1501 - Rachel Comey Pleated Dress. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is one of my favourite projects of the year . The dress has a very clever design with the top of the dress only attached to the front skirt , lots of pleats in the top and the skirt and that the skirt tapers down easing some of the fullness . The back of the dress has the top hanging out and the skirt is plain .<br />

The fabric used was given to me by my ex neighbour , a slightly shiny dove grey with blue and mauve daisies. 100% polyester and I reckon it was bought in the 90s . I was a bit meh about it but as the dress takes almost three metres and I don`t have many fabrics of this length I was limited for choice ( I am trying really hard to stash bust here ) . In the end I really love this dress AND the fabric used . BTW I only had 2.75 metres and it was enough for me to make the dress with the size 14 skirt and size 12 top.<br />

I read a few reviews as I usually do before I made the dress ( and it is a popular pattern ) . A few people mentioned about the instructions for lining the bodice and I started over thinking this. However, in the end I went with what the pattern stated and it turned out really well , a very neat way of lining with no seams showing . I was also a bit worried about all the pleats in the skirt pouching out with my fluffy stomach but they actually conceal it so big win there.<br />

I`m not sure if this pattern is still currently available ( dated 2016 ) but I would highly recommend it and as KS Sews says it also makes a great stand alone skirt . I really want to make this again one day even though it is quite distinctive.Janinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14384221374769122673noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8734794303611926264.post-4948405103119171762019-09-05T19:22:00.001-07:002019-09-05T19:22:38.774-07:00Burdastyle 04/2019 -Belt Bag Skirt . <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I super love this issue of Burdastyle . There are so many designs I would love to make eventually. But I got a quick start on the magazine by sewing up the skirt with the cute little belt bag pocket thing .<br />
I used some really old striped twill which was leftover from a pants making saga ( more on that later ) . The fabric is at least 14 years old and I wonder if it just old enough to look dated , or old enough to look vintage or if I am ahead of a new stripey phase. Whatever, it is 100% cotton, feels great and the colours in the stripes are quite lovely with pale blue, coral , soft browns and beige . And it was perfect for this pattern as the fabric was narrow but long and this skirt uses several narrower pieces - two skirt fronts , backs and sides.<br />
The skirt was fun and not difficult to make but there are a lot of steps with the zipped skirt , the belt , the loops and the pocket . I made a couple of changes to the pattern. I lengthened the button tab on the pocket bag to extend all the way to the top , just a look I prefer to the original and lengthened the overall skirt a few cms to stop at my knee . As per usual with Burda the fit was spot on for me.<br />
As mentioned the fabric was left over from making some pants. Arguably pants are the hardest garments to fit and I had basic issues from the start . It didn`t help that I was using a Patrones magazine in Spanish . I have now found with Patrones that it is hit and miss for me . This is the pattern I used below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wTLQIPcS760/XW4XVkoZfpI/AAAAAAAACdg/y43Jsk9s0Q8MMfKV3Jv7LDtKr3vCImHogCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B976.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wTLQIPcS760/XW4XVkoZfpI/AAAAAAAACdg/y43Jsk9s0Q8MMfKV3Jv7LDtKr3vCImHogCPcBGAYYCw/s640/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B976.jpg" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
Pants with two pleats at the waist , side zip , moderately loose fitting and tapering to the ankles.<br />
The first version the legs fit great but I couldn`t get anywhere near to closing the pants at the waist . I went to the largest size and the waist fit but the legs were very loose. I then cut out my main fabric and took the leg seams especially around the thighs in .Of note I use size 44-48 for Patrones and size 38-40 for Burda , the sizing numbers are very different. The pants are comfortable but not a success. I showed my family and asked if they were too baggy. My husband replied ` What for pajama pants ? ` !! My daughter was obviously diplomatic. I will wear the pants but not beyond the perimeter of my home.<br />

\<br />
More catching upwith . I made this skirt a couple of months ago using this Burdastyle skirt from September 2012. I have made it once before using a denim look wool. This time I used what is arguably my best fabric I own , a cashmere / merino blend fine woven wool which has been in my stash for 8 years. I had been contemplating how much longer I will actually work for and well I am in the home run part of my career . 5 years ? 10 years ? I am unsure. What I was sure about is this fabric is not something I would use in an everyday garment but would be perfect for my work . So I thought I better sew it up .<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gybDY_fy9bk/V9oxUc6WirI/AAAAAAAABoA/aTtGrvl1m8AbwTEzomyMMfYwwqPOvH4ZwCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_4919%255B1%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gybDY_fy9bk/V9oxUc6WirI/AAAAAAAABoA/aTtGrvl1m8AbwTEzomyMMfYwwqPOvH4ZwCPcBGAYYCw/s640/IMG_4919%255B1%255D.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Such a fine fabric deserves to be made into something that will be used in the long run and this classic A line skirt with a single deep inverted pleat is perfect .It is easy to sew but what I forgot from making this skirt before is that I added several cms to the length of the skirt when cutting out . So this version is a bit short for my liking ! Oops !<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QKfgDix5xOc/XW4W3MfyYbI/AAAAAAAACdM/KHwPYrpXXTMYPGumm54Hi6U1yvFMIKDugCEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B969.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1597" data-original-width="1600" height="398" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QKfgDix5xOc/XW4W3MfyYbI/AAAAAAAACdM/KHwPYrpXXTMYPGumm54Hi6U1yvFMIKDugCEwYBhgL/s400/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B969.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
If I wear the skirt with dark stockings I feel OK but I feel as if I have to keep pulling my skirt down.<br />
On the plus side I only used less than half of the fabric so I will be able to make another slightly longer skirt next time . In the meantime I have worn this skirt a few times this winter so all was not lost.<br />
<br />
I also made another classic skirt but instead of making it too short , I made it too big. You see I used a Polish Anna Moda magazine pattern and I assumed that like most other European magazine patterns I had to add in the seam allowances . Not so ! They are included . The magazine is great with lots of good Simplicity and New Look patterns.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I made what is the equivalent of Simplicity 8175 , a very popular straight skirt with a front slit and curved waist band and slant front pockets. I used some navy crepe with a slight stretch to it , left over from some Burdastyle pants I made last year . I did try on the skirt while I was making it and took in the side seams but the too large curved waist band and pocket openings could not be fixed . There are no photos , it just didn`t look good. Such a pity . I used some lovely silk to line the waist band and pockets and invisibly hand stitched the hems. Writing up this blog post was the stimulus to donate the skirt so I hope someone gets to enjoy it. I will definitely be making this skirt again using some more navy crepe I have .<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O8wayxSUwfk/XW4ezdm-IMI/AAAAAAAACd0/yj05F9ln-j8jD6Ifby6c3lCvejdavmDVQCEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B988.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1292" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O8wayxSUwfk/XW4ezdm-IMI/AAAAAAAACd0/yj05F9ln-j8jD6Ifby6c3lCvejdavmDVQCEwYBhgL/s400/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B988.jpg" width="322" /></a></div>
<br />
Only a 50% success rate but at least I used a ` precious ` fabric .<br />

Moving on with my catch up blog posts I made three ,yes three pale blue tops all from magazines my daughter bought me from Europe. I also managed to use fabric which I have stored for a long long time ( between 9- 14 years ! )<br />
The two tops pictured above were made in response to my first semi failed one . I don`t have pictures of that top but I will show the pattern involved.<br />

My semi-failed top was made from a Polish Diana Moden magazine . It is a knit top with a frilly V neck . The pattern included darts which I was a bit surprised about being a knit but I went with it anyway. I should have trusted my instincts because the darts were way too low for me and it just looked wrong. Luckily however it suited my mother`s shape better so she now has it . I used a fine ribbed pale blue knit which Mum gave me anyway . Apart from the darts I was impressed with the pattern. The sleeves fit in the armscye perfectly and the amount of ease in the body was just right. I had no idea how to really sew the plain back neck collar to frilled front section so I just kind of fudged that bit and it looked a bit messy but Mum didn`t care.<br />

The first pale blue top pictured was sewn from a Polish version of Patrones . I have made four Patrones patterns now and two have been good and two have taken a bit of work to get something wearable. This top in the former good category . It is a very simple pullover top with a back neck slit and cuffed sleeves. The pattern is based on an actual RTW clothing company Triana by C that I assume is Spanish .<br />

The back slit opening was finished off with a tab with a button hole . I find loops to be flimsy to use and tricky to make . This idea was inspired by pinterest .<br />

The front tie knot top is from the German Meine Nahmode magazine which is a compilation of Simplicity and New Look patterns - I counted 14 different patterns ,which in Australia would be at least $75 dollars worth if the patterns were on super sale. ( I write down the pattern numbers on the magazine so I can check the reviews easier ) The knot top seems to be a very popular pattern. I lengthened the front pattern pieces which form the tie knot because I noticed in many reviews the tie was very short . I also had some trouble easing the sleeves in and so I have some little puckers which I could not entirely eliminate . Despite this I really like it . I rarely tuck in tops these days so any blouse which is designed to be worn outside of pants etc is a winner for me. <br />
I`m really impressed and jealous with how many sewing magazines are published in Europe . Australia used to have Australian Stitches but that never included sewing patterns . There are some Australian crafty magazines around but absolutely no garment ones that I am aware of. <br />
Anyway my daughter could not have bought me better souvenirs than this and she knows how much I appreciate them !<br />

As requested super glam modelled shots of my top . I even brushed my hair ( well I thought I had ) , put on lippy ( can you tell ?? ) and wore matching earrings ( at least that bit was OK ! ) . <br />
This is my second Issey Miyake Pattern I`ve made and I have been impressed both times by the design details. I have one more of his patterns in my collection and I`m keen to try it out. <br />

My next post is about two tops I made from the completely different end of the spectrum.<br />
First up Vogue 1309 an Issey Miyake pattern from 2012 which is classified advanced . This is the first time I have ever sewn an advanced pattern . I had read the reviews prior to making this and to say I was intimidated is an understatement. I got there in the end but it was not all smooth sailing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ryMq3Ouh3jM/XV0NPmn-GNI/AAAAAAAACaI/4dvylXOXV2gPHjnZDrkD5ggG2_ZMzZaXgCLcBGAs/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B936.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ryMq3Ouh3jM/XV0NPmn-GNI/AAAAAAAACaI/4dvylXOXV2gPHjnZDrkD5ggG2_ZMzZaXgCLcBGAs/s640/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B936.jpg" width="426" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Vogue 1309 front . </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I used fabric from my neighbour ( who I mentioned in my last post and showed pictures of her latest kind donations ) . The pictures do not show up the richness of the colours in this fabric but if you think of magnificent peacock hues then that would come close. I am pretty sure this fabric dates from the 90s being a shiny polyester but I love the abstract pattern and colours and I am happy with how it suited this pattern.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qUabfVdlRpI/XV0NBCvkKLI/AAAAAAAACaM/2vqHW62cKREBtb5BBnyMLfcpEUnXpeMRgCEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B934.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qUabfVdlRpI/XV0NBCvkKLI/AAAAAAAACaM/2vqHW62cKREBtb5BBnyMLfcpEUnXpeMRgCEwYBhgL/s640/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B934.jpg" width="426" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">vogue 1309 back . </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
This pattern is incredibly clever and it starts with just three rectangles ( and bias binding ) so you think how can this be advanced as the cutting out is the easiest thing ever . Then you cut a slash down the centre of the largest rectangle and then the fun begins . Well it was fun to begin with as I thought I was doing OK . But as I got to the end I thought I have mucked up somewhere as nothing was making sense.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JG5TD8NEeBg/XV0M5E_xHLI/AAAAAAAACaA/R2dztxCtpr8oxFqjZlgrLz6rmI7etj_QwCEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B933.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JG5TD8NEeBg/XV0M5E_xHLI/AAAAAAAACaA/R2dztxCtpr8oxFqjZlgrLz6rmI7etj_QwCEwYBhgL/s640/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B933.jpg" width="426" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">vogue left side with zip </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I must have twisted one of the shoulders around so I unpicked a couple of seams and luckily was able to untwist the whole mess . Then it all made sense and I was able to finish the top. At one point I was feeling quite the failure that I could not get it right and was lamenting the potential loss of a lovely fabric .<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-y2YVKqki6lY/XV0NJsuMXzI/AAAAAAAACaQ/suhMSJ57NWI1ZOH8rcYQoZB6zHg0wZYCgCEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B935.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-y2YVKqki6lY/XV0NJsuMXzI/AAAAAAAACaQ/suhMSJ57NWI1ZOH8rcYQoZB6zHg0wZYCgCEwYBhgL/s640/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B935.jpg" width="426" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Vogue 1309 right side</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
As everyone else has said in their reviews it is absolutely essential to carefully mark all the circles and squares on the pattern . I used coloured numbered dots and even wrote the colours and numbers on a separate piece of paper to keep track of it all and this helped me.<br />
I did not use bias binding as recommended on the pattern to the inner slash but over locked it and I also over locked all the outer edges of the rectangles . On the pattern the outer rectangles are left unfinished and I don`t know of too many wovens that would not fray in time .<br />
<br />
When I finished the top I noticed that it felt quite tight on the left side but the right shoulder strap area was loose and in danger of falling down and revealing more than I would like. So I unpicked along the left side of the top with the long middle sized rectangle until it felt comfortable and added in a wedge of fabric here. On the right shoulder I tacked it down to the underlying fabric so hopefully I won`t do any inadvertent public flashing. There were also places where the overlocking stitch could be seen externally so I made narrow hems on the machine there. The pattern recommends an open ended zip but since I didn`t have one of those that matched I just used a regular zip and there were no issues in doing so .<br />
<br />
I am glad I made this pattern successfully ( eventually ) . It really is like the sewing version of Twister and you need your wits about you and your eyes by the way ( the lettered circles and squares are small and faint ). I look forward to wearing this on an evening out.<br />
<br />
So top two . The just about easiest ever T shirt made from Burda Easy January 2018 edition which is also my first ever Burda Easy project . My daughter bought me the magazine when she was in Europe and this version is in Polish . I know absolutely no Polish although my paternal grandmother`s family immigrated to Australia in the 1830s from Prussia ( which is where Poland now is ) as a useless aside for anyone to know. <br />

The front is a slight scoop and the back is V shaped but it is not a deep V so it can be worn with the V in front as a bonus. I used a white ribbed cotton interlock with a small mauve floral but since I see this as nightwear fabric this top is relegated for PJs only . This is a really useful little pattern and and I will make it again .Burda Easy is unlike the usual Burda Style magazine. There are not so many styles in each edition but the patterns are printed separated on tissue paper like your usual envelope patterns so need to go cross eyed tracing tangled messes of lines. There are also clear step by step construction diagrams .<br />

I have considered getting back to the old blog for quite a while . I started an instagram account but recently a non sewing friend ` found ` and followed me . For some reason I feel a bit embarrassed by that and very self conscious since my posts basically revolve around sewing and nothing really interesting or amazing ( including the sewing ! )Instagram is easier and I get more ` likes ` but it is limited in what you can write . Also at times Instagram can feel a bit hostile which is something I haven`t noticed with blogs . I have realised that sewing and documenting the sewing is my relaxation and safe place so back to the blog where I have real life sewing friends but since they are sewing friends I don`t feel so embarrassed or self conscious .<br />
<br />
So for 2019 my sewing has focused on making at least one pattern from all the sewing magazines my daughter bought me from her travels and trying to make up the patterns I have bought from Spotlight .<br />
I have also been ever determined to sew my stash and not add to it ! To this end I have been fairly successful . I have used all the magazines and now working on the envelope patterns.<br />
And can you believe I have not bought one piece of fabric this year , not even a little scrap ! My ex neighbour did give me a few lovely pieces at the beginning of the year . She has stopped sewing garments completely now and I wasn`t going to say no . She has given quite a bit in the past too and I have sewn up some of this including my last two projects which I will eventually get around to blogging about .<br />
This is what I was given from left to right. A soft ivory jacquard , an embroidered teal cotton , liberty lawn and stone linen ranging from 2-3 metres in length . There was also some patchwork cotton . All really lovely and special to me so I will need to think carefully about what these eventually get sewn into.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sCXdQol_gxs/XVs4b3xxFNI/AAAAAAAACZE/T4ugzj7rGu00ykuNOlMUoE4wPlzaZIpeQCLcBGAs/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B928.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="425" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sCXdQol_gxs/XVs4b3xxFNI/AAAAAAAACZE/T4ugzj7rGu00ykuNOlMUoE4wPlzaZIpeQCLcBGAs/s640/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B928.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
Now onto my first sewing project which was very practical and satisfying in terms of function and stash busting. A lined hat . I made this back in January when it was very hot and humid. I used all scraps that I have held onto forever . The star twill was leftover from shorts I made my daughter in October 2012 . The lining was stamped in gold Made in Japan and who knows where that was from .<br />
<br />

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hdOR3m-A6zg/XVs4KNj7rrI/AAAAAAAACZA/bQxbT-1OH4o73Pi1SDyLXrNwaV-uUwpfACEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B926.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="265" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hdOR3m-A6zg/XVs4KNj7rrI/AAAAAAAACZA/bQxbT-1OH4o73Pi1SDyLXrNwaV-uUwpfACEwYBhgL/s400/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B926.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

<br />
The pattern came from a sewing magazine that I believe is Japanese but published in French. The patterns are fairly basic and include hats and bags and even an umbrella as well as clothes . There are quite a lot of designs as well . I think I will get around to making something else from here sometime but in the meantime there are plenty of other patterns ahead of the queue. I like that the instructions include very detailed drawings so no French is needed ( also helps that the patterns as mentioned are simple ) .<br />
<br />

So that`s it for now. I will try to catch up as quickly as possible all my other sewing projects . The hardest thing about blogging for me is getting photos of the clothes on me so for now they will be dress form photos unless I happen to get lucky with a photographer or I am bothered setting up a tripod and timer .<br />
My last photo has to be of my beautiful little boy Toby . He died just over a month ago and I am still<br />
beyond sad and missing him terribly . He was the best little companion I could ever want.<br />

<br />
<br />
Another year done and dusted.<br />
In 2018 I sewed ( and blogged ) a bit less than previous years but I am finishing on a high . Over the Christmas and New Years period I managed to wangle 10 days off altogether which meant I finished two projects ( and a book too ) - a slippery , frustrating silk satin blouse and a coffee table runner ( my one and only UFO from 12 months ago - yay ) .<br />
<br />
I made a total of 38 items for myself ( and three for my daughters) . These consist of<br />
Tops / Shirts - 10<br />
Cardigans/ vests etc - 5<br />
Pants - 2<br />
Dresses - 4<br />
Skirts - 2<br />
Nightwear - 4<br />
Underwear<br />
Camisoles - 3<br />
Underpants - 7<br />
Handbags - 1<br />
<br />
My most successful item was my navy Burda pants . Navy work pants are a staple for me as I tend to wear mainly separates and they match with most of my tops . The pants were comfortable to wear and easy to care for and I am happy to report the fabric is holding up well so far.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LHs01TuuQ08/W0K1b-XYbeI/AAAAAAAACO8/o-f6uocLpQ8VToQrFrWUt5BwlpdrGoTPwCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B770.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="960" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LHs01TuuQ08/W0K1b-XYbeI/AAAAAAAACO8/o-f6uocLpQ8VToQrFrWUt5BwlpdrGoTPwCPcBGAYYCw/s400/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B770.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<br />
My favourite piece I made though was my silk top . The fabric is so pretty and feels lovely to wear . Honestly the photos do not do justice to the colours and as well does not show up the floral jacquard weave.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_rXT2-7mbV0/W0K1Kz0QZbI/AAAAAAAACO8/NHEBIO9sGm0Ja02TYXa2RUduMvPt-wmcwCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B763.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1504" data-original-width="1600" height="375" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_rXT2-7mbV0/W0K1Kz0QZbI/AAAAAAAACO8/NHEBIO9sGm0Ja02TYXa2RUduMvPt-wmcwCPcBGAYYCw/s400/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B763.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
But I also loved my liberty shirt , ditsy navy shirt and comfy dresses I sewed up.<br />
<br />
I made four things which were failures for various reasons.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tijfDjaxggM/WzNmueLh6oI/AAAAAAAACN0/7LgpyNucpRc9ir5qPg6uASMp4-6NcjO6wCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B760.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tijfDjaxggM/WzNmueLh6oI/AAAAAAAACN0/7LgpyNucpRc9ir5qPg6uASMp4-6NcjO6wCPcBGAYYCw/s320/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B760.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
My Burda jumper - fabric looks great but was terrible to sew . The pattern from Burda WOF August 1993 is good though and when I find more appropriate knit I will try it again.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

My Burda Jacket ( from June 2012 ) - this is too short for my liking . The fabric was just scraps but I did buy the zip especially for this project which meant a trip to Spotlight 50 minutes away so more of a time loss than fabric and money .<br />

My Vogue handbag - too small to be useful and I did not like the way the lining and top of the bag were constructed. I love the fabric I used in this and luckily I still have some more to have another go at making another handbag. A disappointment for sure and I admit I expect better from Vogue and especially a designer pattern . The pattern is Vogue 8407 , a Marcy Tilton design. I have just realised I did not blog this project.<br />
This pattern could work if I enlarged the pattern and changed how it is made - perhaps something for the future ??<br />

My Anne Klein Vogue Blouse ( vogue 1294 ) . I loved the sewing process of making my blouse but did not like the end result. The fabric is a wrinkly rayon so ironing the flounce was a PITA . Also I just prefer simpler clothes so this blouse was donated to the op shop.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Overall I spent only just over $222 on my sewing projects. My most expensive piece was the Style Arc Blakeley jeans at $39.95. Since I am given fabric and use scraps and re-use patterns and salvage zips and buttons often my clothes cost nothing to very little but my time to make. I find that incredibly satisfying and it also means if I accidently wreck my clothes it doesn`t really matter .<br />
Apart from sewing I purchased 8 items of clothing ( all from the op shop ) which were mainly cardigans and pants . I don`t buy many clothes but enough that I can never participate in the RTW fast .<br />
<br />
Over the years I have been trying to slowly decrease the size of my wardrobe and this year 11 less items came in than went out which is a consistent pattern over the last few years . I can not throw away clothing purely to satisfy a decluttering bug - they need to be stained or holey or not right to go out.<br />
Another goal has been to use my fabric stash and try not to buy much and I succeeded in having 10 metres less than the beginning of the year . Reducing my wardrobe and my stash are slow , longer term projects and this and continuing to use my unused patterns will continue on into 2019.<br />
<br />
Happy New Year to all .<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My eldest daughter travelled all around the world in 2018 and brought me home several sewing magazines from Europe . This is my first project from them - specifically Patrones No. 386.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IAr7iHb7bDE/XBXcjJ8NyvI/AAAAAAAACWY/_5PFF4NmwgoSkWa8hR1GDpy56zDIC1KSACEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B901.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="425" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IAr7iHb7bDE/XBXcjJ8NyvI/AAAAAAAACWY/_5PFF4NmwgoSkWa8hR1GDpy56zDIC1KSACEwYBhgL/s640/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B901.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I made the dress on the left which has a round neck , sleeveless bodice gathered at the waist , waist band and gathered maxi skirt . The main difference is my dress is knee length ( not enough fabric ) but my version turned out with a much higher neckline . Also there was too much fabric at the front armscye but this was easy to cut away.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qGBGSKbakQI/XBXdkp_DVgI/AAAAAAAACW0/YTt0pjHmCj4waZsmpp5xQoSwoXZfdx5MwCEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B904.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qGBGSKbakQI/XBXdkp_DVgI/AAAAAAAACW0/YTt0pjHmCj4waZsmpp5xQoSwoXZfdx5MwCEwYBhgL/s400/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B904.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I used an embroidered pale pink linen which is not my favourite but was good to test out a new pattern from a relatively new pattern company ( I have made one previous Patrones pattern , a skirt , which I adore -just wore it last night for a Christmas party ) . I love the embellished look of the original dress and I was lucky enough to find some matching pink lace in my stash which I applied to the waistband.<br />

This photo shows exactly why it was good to do a ` wearable ` muslin . The back is tightish ( but wearable ) but look at all that fabric pooling in my lumbar region . This has not happened with my other sewing ever !<br />
With the back adjusted I think this will make a terrific dress , I do really love the magazines version but mine is a bit meh. I will wear it and give a go though . I just also wanted to include a photo of the Patrones pattern sheet - much clearer than Burda`s and Ottobre`s as well.<br />

<br />
I used the very very popular blouse pattern 115 from Burda April 2014 . Heaps of people have made this one and I can now see why. It was easy to make, very comfortable to wear and is just a bit different to your usual top. The only change I made was to lengthen the blouse by 5cms . I used another pale pink embroidered fabric - cotton voile this time - which is a bit sheer . I realised this pattern with the double crossed over front would be a perfect match for the sheer fabric.<br />
<br />

I highly recommend this pattern . I hope everyone has a good Christmas. I am certainly looking forward to getting 6 days off , eating some good food and spending time with my precious family.<br />

I have documented my fondness of scrap sewing here plenty of times and I was due another good scrap sew up , this time spurred on by the need for new summer PJs . It also allowed me to try out another new ( to me ) pattern from my collection.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iwrs6f208gA/XBGQdXZ-jbI/AAAAAAAACV8/cUWm7kvhnucZY-y9X0oepUfG0LsCx8S5wCEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B897.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iwrs6f208gA/XBGQdXZ-jbI/AAAAAAAACV8/cUWm7kvhnucZY-y9X0oepUfG0LsCx8S5wCEwYBhgL/s640/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B897.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
First up the tops .<br />
Kwik Sew 3232 is a sporting / golfing pattern for a skort ( shorts with a front skirt overlay , zip cardigan and tank top . ) I have never made a plain tank top like this before thus the need to break out a new pattern for such a simple and easy garment. However Kwik Sew often have little details that belie the simplicity of the pattern . In this case they have a built in dart at the sides created by the front being slightly longer than the back around the bust area . I made size Medium and this had a comfortable amount of ease without being overly huge . I used a plain blue pique knit given to me in 2010 and from which I have previously made a Burdastyle Henley T shirt . Now despite the fact you could not get an easier pattern I mucked up . I only had enough fabric to cut the front on the fold and the back had to be cut out of two pieces . Yes , I cut the back on the fold and the front in two ! I rummaged around my trims bag and the best I could do was some lace with a central mauve strip which I sewed down over the front seam line .<br />
<br />
Kwik Sew 2779 is a pattern for PJs . I used the V neck tank pattern which I thought would be an interesting variation on a plain tank . As per usual Kwik Sew instructions explain how to sew the V neck very well . I used scrap stripe knit again given to me in 2010 and from which I made a Knipmode dress and ribbing dating from who knows when . The pattern like above includes a built dart . I even managed to match the stripes ( except where the ` dart ` is of course ) Like the plain blue tank it has just the right amount of ease.<br />
I will definitely be using these patterns again especially since they take so little fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vddu03XGu28/XBGQsH8m4YI/AAAAAAAACWA/FbNbcdrgOmY9MTEKNqzblmp3S9AGe-9MACEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B899.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vddu03XGu28/XBGQsH8m4YI/AAAAAAAACWA/FbNbcdrgOmY9MTEKNqzblmp3S9AGe-9MACEwYBhgL/s640/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B899.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally the PJ shorts I made using an ancient Simplicity pattern for a nightie set which includes a pattern for bloomers . I left out the elastic at the legs though . I used some Japanese cotton that my daughter brought home from Japan when she visited in 2010 ( there is a theme here ! ) . It was given to her by her host family and there was 12.5 metres of only 40cm wide fabric( There is still about 3 metres left ) . I have no idea what the kanji or hiragana symbols on the shorts mean ( or even if they are a genuine symbol ) . I ironed on a panda bear motif on the front so I could tell it was the front ! The cotton is very stiff but after washing softens up nicely . The shorts are very short and I think I need to adjust the elastic to be a bit smaller but they have been comfortable for the couple of hot nights we have had.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Finito finally .<br />
I have being slowly sewing this blouse for a month . I just love the feeling when I have finished something whether it is a book or sewing ( I especially love the feeling of a completed bike ride and a work day ) .<br />
This blouse is Vogue 1294 , an Anne Klein pattern dated 2012 .<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KXh949rmodQ/W80rwH94MmI/AAAAAAAACTw/EgJBZBbX0CYJHy_JddWXbRjryCv4dYNpACEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B857.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KXh949rmodQ/W80rwH94MmI/AAAAAAAACTw/EgJBZBbX0CYJHy_JddWXbRjryCv4dYNpACEwYBhgL/s400/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B857.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
I love sewing shirts and the collar on this one is particularly intriguing , a double flounce .<br />
I used an off white rayon which feels very soft but is very wrinkly ( bought from an op shop in 2015 , 4 metres in total , so plenty left over for a long sleeve shirt ) .<br />
I made some changes to the pattern - I did not line it and I did not add the chiffon trim to the princess seams . Instead I added some lace to the upper flounce piece and the edge of the sleeves but just so it peaks out .I used buttons for the narrow front bands instead of snaps ( which I can not get to keep closed )<br />
The instructions for the blouse are excellent so even though it looks complicated it all comes together really well. Well , I don`t follow the instructions for making the narrow hems on the flounces - I use the method that involves three lots of stitching which ends up with a good result and worth the extra effort .<br />
( 1 . stitch along the edge of the fabric , 2. turn this up and stitch again , 3. trim the excess fabric and then turn up again enclosing the raw edge and stitch close the edge creating the narrow hem )<br />

It was a windy day but I like how this photo shows how fluid the flounces are - you definitely need a drapey fabric for this pattern. Now this is finished I have traced out a pattern from the Patrones magazine my daughter bought me from Spain - have to enourage this kind of behaviour from my children . </div>

<br />
I have this `thing ` about using stuff . According to Clear The Decks decluttering sewing spaces podcast this could be due to many different mindset issues like sense of duty or sentimentality or money ( these are great podcasts by the way - I have found them very helpful ) .<br />
Backtrack a few years and one of the best sewing op shop finds I have ever had were 10 unused recent Burda magazines . I have been determined to make at least one project from each one - see `thing` above . But I have struggled with the last two magazines left .<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qt12F80P9B4/W53tzLL_YTI/AAAAAAAACS0/5YFZs9ePg4wxyIlH59UpHuwEZAJOo6ZEgCEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B855.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1223" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qt12F80P9B4/W53tzLL_YTI/AAAAAAAACS0/5YFZs9ePg4wxyIlH59UpHuwEZAJOo6ZEgCEwYBhgL/s640/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B855.jpg" width="488" /></a></div>
<br />
Burdastyle June 2012 had a few items I could have made - a stretch lace dress , a pleated skirt , a loose fitting pleated neckline dress but I had no suitable fabric . I have really thought about this a lot and I mean a lot . I finally figured the above jacket could work with scrap knit left over from a winter dress I made earlier this year and a piece of black knit given to me .<br />
The jacket was easy to sew and looks really cute in the above photo .<br />
However it is very short , too short for me and the elasticated waist band creeps upwards .It is comfortable to wear but just not a good look for me . I did wear the jacket several times because I like to give something a thorough go before I make a decision on whether it is a winner or wadder and this is a wadder .<br />
However the length is not the main issue here . The main problem is my mindset about using stuff and not letting it go to waste . I could have used my fabric better for another pattern or bought new material to make a different pattern . I am trying to tackle my mindsets and not get caught in this obsession.<br />
<br />
Burdastyle February 2012 was the other issue I struggled to find a pattern to sew and I almost gave up .<br />
This issue seemed to have either very loose , baggy clothing like the paper bag skirt below and the super puffy sleeved wrap top or very slim fitting dresses . There were also some maternity styles.<br />

<br />
I finally took a punt on the pants above .I haven`t sewn many pants before but I have somehow accumulated quite a bit of navy blue fabric so there was nothing to lose and I got to satisfy my ` thing ` ( and replace my old navy blue pants which have a shiny bum and knees ) .<br />
The pants have small waist pleats with slim fitting legs . I used an old Kwik Sew pattern to construct the fly front ( I wasn`t even going to bother looking at Burda for this ) but overall pants are not hard to sew , it is just the fitting that is difficult .<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LHs01TuuQ08/W0K1b-XYbeI/AAAAAAAACO8/o-f6uocLpQ8VToQrFrWUt5BwlpdrGoTPwCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B770.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="960" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LHs01TuuQ08/W0K1b-XYbeI/AAAAAAAACO8/o-f6uocLpQ8VToQrFrWUt5BwlpdrGoTPwCPcBGAYYCw/s640/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B770.jpg" width="382" /></a></div>

<br />
Now this is a case where my using stuff mindset triumphed . I can see from the photos that my pants are too long and I should go back and rehem them but apart from this I love my new navy pants . They are comfy and I am pretty happy with how they fit and look.<br />
<br />
I have now completed at least one project from each of my most recent Burdas I own and am tackling my unused envelope patterns but with more mindfulness and hopefully more success. <br />

<br />
My latest sewing ticks a few boxes -replacing old garments, using ancient stash and trialling new patterns.<br />
The above top uses a Vogue pattern 8982 by Katherine Tilton . I made view E .I thought this was a pattern for a shirt but it is for a vest / jacket so I had to make a couple of modifications to make this work. Many reviews stated that it runs large so I cut out size 10 instead of my usual 12 . Looking at the photos on the front cover I could see the arm hole is very low so I raised the bottom by about an inch. The result is a top that still has plenty of room but won`t flash my camisole. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used two pieces of navy and white ditsy floral cotton that Mum gave me 10 years ago . Turns out the fabric was really skirt pieces . I had no idea. I managed to just squeeze the main pattern pieces onto the fabric. I did not have enough fabric for the armhole facings but I like the bias binding better anyway and not enough for the bottom hem facing which wasn`t necessary as well. The small print covers up all the interesting seams of the shirt but it looks lovely on the inside. The shirt was quite easy to sew and all the pieces came together really well. </div>

I am really happy with the fit and the style. Despite the interesting seams being lost in my fabric it still has the shaped and lovely hem line . I will have to make this again and try emphasise those curved seams ( my list of to do one day projects is getting impossibly long ) . </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My next project was to make a much needed long sleeved winter PJ top ( I only have one other ! ).It was a perfect opportunity to trial an unused pattern with another piece of 10 year old stash . Nothing to lose. The pink fabric is that old fashioned polycotton interlock with not much stretch or recovery . </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4SSytS7szJs/W5D4RDkd4sI/AAAAAAAACQ0/PSC2KDsgAUkf4BKzL157gFnYR7NpnyO5QCEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B820.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4SSytS7szJs/W5D4RDkd4sI/AAAAAAAACQ0/PSC2KDsgAUkf4BKzL157gFnYR7NpnyO5QCEwYBhgL/s400/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B820.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used this T shirt pattern from Ottobre Spring /Summer 2016 . It appears to be fitted around the shoulders and bust and flares out at the waist and hip . I obviously lengthened the sleeves and had a bit of fun practising some machine embroidery. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The top is easy to make but I have the same criticism that it is hard to trace Ottobre patterns because there is no distinction between the different sized pattern lines. My top did not seem to flare as much at the bottom as I was expecting but it still makes a very comfy PJ top which I have worn heaps with our cold weather. I am not sure if I will make it again though . </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now for some reason I always get a bit worried about sewing with really old fabric. Sometimes I have thought so much about what it will become that I think I will be sick of the garment before I have even worn it. But so far I always get double the pleasure from wearing them and satisfaction of using the fabric . Silly and a bit weird I know. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now with these garments finished my sewing room is actually looking a bit tidy . Using the Katherine Tilton pattern fulfills my personal sewing challenge to use my unused patterns. A couple of years ago I blogged about my pattern piles and looking back at that post my piles have definitely shrunk. The patterns below are what I have left to make but that will keep my busy for a long time . I have cut out the paper pattern pieces for the Marcy Tilton Vogue bag pattern 8407 ( all rectangles ! ) and will have a play around with some fabric scraps I have . </div>

I have made a brown skirt to replace my previous brown skirt but this version is just about as opposite to my old one as can be . My old brown skirt was plain , this is a print . My old brown skirt was a gored trumpet style , this is a pegged pencil skirt . My old skirt had a wide yoke , this one is high waisted with darts and no waist band. My old skirt was made from an indestructible non stretch woven polyester so that it still looked new , this one is made of a stretch cotton sateen ( that I hope will also be a bit indestructible ) . The latter was one of the problems - I was just so sick of my old skirt .<br />
<br />

<br />
The pattern is from the most recent Burda Style that I own , 2/2018 , pencil skirt 119 , part of this beautiful suit . The most interesting ( and trickiest ) part of the skirt are the rectangular insets which also incorporate one of the pair of front darts. The rectangle extends across both the front and backs of the skirt. Because I usually do not tuck my tops into my skirts this feature will never be seen . Now Burda Style have a gazillion pencil skirt patterns and I really only chose this one over the others so I could at least have the satisfaction of having used the magazine. ( I bought this magazine for jacket 105 -a kimono inspired jacket with interesting front bands ) .<br />

I did quite a good job of matching the print at the sides but a not so good job at the back.centre seam . However I am gratified that this does not show up too badly in these photos. But what I can not really get past in my other photos is that the hem looks uneven in the front because of the skewiff print . I hate going back fixing up finished projects but I might just be forced to do something about that hem . </div>

Till next time , happy sewing. </div>

( PS- I had enough of this fabric left over to make my middle daughter a skirt as well. I used another Burda Style pencil skirt pattern but did not get photos. ) </div>

<br />
After my previous sweater knit sewing disaster I got back on the sewing seat so to speak and made up another one . Ahh, much much better this time . This sweater knit was a delight to sew - it didn`t stretch out , it didn`t unravel and was easy to stitch . This fabric came from the same internet seller as the awful ( but pretty ) sweater knit but was accidentally sent instead of another order . I contacted her about the mistake and she sent the correct fabric and said I could keep this one ! Bonus ! <br />

<br />
<br />
I used a combination of the Vogue wardrobe pattern 2101 and New Look 6000.<br />
I used the Vogue pattern for the main body of the dress and added the fabulous asymmetrical collar detail from New Look .This is now the second time this year I have used the Vogue pattern after having it in my stash unused for probably close to a decade. I love the fit and it has been easy to adapt for different neckline looks . Who knows I might even get to use the original pattern as is one day. There is something to be said about not destashing or decluttering !<br />
<br />

<br />
I love the collar detail . New Look 6000 has been a very popular dress patter but I only discovered it after it become OOP . I was lucky to pick up the pattern from an op shop but it was not complete. No matter the collar pieces were intact . I am loving accessorising this dress with the handful of brooches that I own. This one is a vintage silver and paua shell butterfly . I am not sure if brooches are considered a bit old hat but I love them and this one came from a special friend .<br />

This is my third warm cosy winter dress I have made this season but I will stop there now . <br />
I am reaching saturation point in my wardrobe but want to keep on creating so I am now sewing up replacement items of older items that are had it or I am entirely sick of. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I finally used my most favourite piece of fabric that I own .<br />
This piece of silk was bought in Beijing in 2008 . Perhaps it was because it was 10 years old , perhaps because I am getting bigger and my fabric is not , perhaps because of life stuff but I finally used it .<br />
I only had 1.1 metres and I had quite a different pattern in mind when I purchased the silk but that pattern is looking dated now .<br />
Instead I used what is becoming a TNT pattern , the Ottobre Woman S/S 2016 Kimono top pattern.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qWWiOn-u5To/V9oyvshZpPI/AAAAAAAABoo/DSSs-rItR6keKVBIKZxg1PLzOLg1WOg0wCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_4925%255B1%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qWWiOn-u5To/V9oyvshZpPI/AAAAAAAABoo/DSSs-rItR6keKVBIKZxg1PLzOLg1WOg0wCPcBGAYYCw/s400/IMG_4925%255B1%255D.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
A simple darted woven top with a scooped neck with a bias binding finish , dropped shoulders forming a small sleeve and a relaxed amount of ease. And it only takes about a metre of fabric. It is a classic pattern that will not date quickly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_ARn2dO6unY/W0K1XzWBNDI/AAAAAAAACOs/XpMskUhDHRw6-fovwFqPVR7Qvhf3jlMLgCEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B768.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1555" data-original-width="1600" height="388" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_ARn2dO6unY/W0K1XzWBNDI/AAAAAAAACOs/XpMskUhDHRw6-fovwFqPVR7Qvhf3jlMLgCEwYBhgL/s400/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B768.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The silk is predominantly in a minty green with swirls of mauve , ocean greens and blues , chartreuse and charcoal.<br />
It was purchased at the Silk Road Markets in Beijing . Most of the market was taken over by stalls selling fake designer clothes and bags , pashminas and chop sticks etc but on the top floor there was a very large area selling silks and the variety was overwhelming. It took me some time to narrow down my choices but then you can not just simply buy the fabric. There were no prices displayed and I suppose you are meant to haggle which I hate. Next to me were an American couple negotiating costs and what they were being offered was much higher than what my shop assistant told me were the prices so I just accepted that and said yes ! It worked out to be about $15 Australian and I thought that seemed quite good although I am not in business of buying silk regularly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bRMssaBwUxA/W0K1P7x2_VI/AAAAAAAACOs/k-MQVni3f-QKwLhJG6_XQsVfvh3nClojwCEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B766.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bRMssaBwUxA/W0K1P7x2_VI/AAAAAAAACOs/k-MQVni3f-QKwLhJG6_XQsVfvh3nClojwCEwYBhgL/s400/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B766.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
My photos unfortunately do not show up how beautiful the silk is in real life . Now that I have sewn it I suppose that means another fabric moves to the top of the precious list . I still have two pieces of silk from Beijing and another couple of pieces of cotton from Shanghai. Then there are three remaining pieces of cotton my daughter bought from Tokyo for me . I also bought a spotty georgette from Toyko as a souvenir in 2013 . I have a piece of cashmere wool blend to make a skirt and Mum gave me a large remnant of some pink and white striped Swiss cotton which feels as good as Liberty . The theme of precious fabrics being they are souvenirs from overseas or of exceptional quality . I am working on a plan of sewing about one of these per year to extend the joy of my precious fabrics which equates to a decade !<br />
If anyone has any precious fabric stories they would like to share then I would love to hear them !<br />
Cheers Janine.<br />

A sewing ` up ` was this T shirt using my favourite pattern Kwik Sew 2965 . I think this is my 6th version now. I only had a mere scrap of stretch panne velvet so I had to cut the back with a centre seam. The pattern is quick , easy and only uses small pieces of fabric. Win.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Another sewing `up ` was my first ever refashion ! I wish I had a before photo but years ago I made a jacket from some blue polar fleece . I paid full price for the Butterick 6835 pattern and full price for the polar fleece which wasn`t particularly cheap. I wanted to make the shorter version and bought fabric according to requirements listed on the back of the pattern envelope. This turned out to be way too much so I had enough for the longer version. The end result was a humongous ugly short coat / long jacket . But because I had actually invested some money in this I wore it - in public ! ( Amazing my daughters let me do this ) After a couple of years I came to my senses but put the jacket away in my cupboard to do something with. Several years later I finally got around to it. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I unpicked the jacket and because it was so huge it was easy to get new fronts , sleeves and a back on the existing pieces. I used another old pattern, this time Burda 8881. This pattern is much better sized but the instructions are weird. It says to hand sew in the front zip !! What the heck !! No way. Apart from that little bit of Burda madness the pattern was very easy. I left on the pockets from the original jacket but they were massive too in keeping with the whole over sized thing . I unpicked them but you can just see the impressions where they were. Still this is much better than the original garment and I have worn it many times . Win. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
OK I think I have found a worse fabric to sew than silk chiffon . Really. Loosely woven sweater knit . Ravelly . Poor stretch recovery . Curly. It looks so pretty with its raspberry ripple appeal and so soft . It lured me in but what a devil to sew. I did try really.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J9Fw0RGQAuU/WzN05krmixI/AAAAAAAACOI/793Zoo2sigYoyy1Q-zInJV59GoEyLhFXwCEwYBhgL/s1600/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B726.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J9Fw0RGQAuU/WzN05krmixI/AAAAAAAACOI/793Zoo2sigYoyy1Q-zInJV59GoEyLhFXwCEwYBhgL/s400/camera%2Bpictures2017%2B726.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I cut strips of bias cut interfacing and stabilised all the seams as directed. I treated the fabric like a new born baby , handling it so gently. I mean look how nice my collar looks . It was the hemming that led to my down fall. I measured where I wanted the hem but ahem, cut a great bit honking hole in the main body of the pullover. I cut this off and overlocked the edge and it was all downhill after that . I tried to rescue my pullover by adding a wide band to the bottom but the seam line hits right on the fluffiest bit of my stomach and looked just terrible. I took a photo and chucked in the bin.<br />
I am wondering if this failure is just not sewing karma because I used an old Burda magazine (August 1993 ! ) and cut out the pattern . Yes , I didn`t trace the pattern , I cut it out . After looking at the magazine several times I realised that I would never make anything else . Despite all this I really like the pattern and will try again . In a more cooperative fabric . And I won`t cut a hole in the front .<br />
Hope your sewing is all up , up , up !<br />

More shirts ! No exaggeration , I love sewing them.<br />
First up a cream silk shirt using Vogue 2634 , an OOP pattern .<br />
I just wanted a very simple pattern to showcase the beautiful cream silk that has a self small chequered pattern . I bought the silk from the op shop last year for only $2.00 for 4 metres but it is very narrow ( only 72cm wide ) . At the time I was trying to fabric fast so I kidded myself that the silk would be for my daughter who wanted tops made out of natural fibres for her travel overseas in 2018 . Ha ! cream silk must be the most impractical thing in the world for a student travelling on a strict budget.<br />
Just in case she changed her mind though I have quickly made it up while she is still away.<br />
The only variation I made to this pattern was to add vented cuffs from a Kwik Sew pattern. I did not do any top stitching , did not add the pockets and hand stitched the hems to keep the shirt details to a minimum.<br />

I used the collar tutorial from Four Square Walls which she took from an old sewing pattern. I remember using this method to sew up a collar / stand when I was in my teens so I went through my old patterns and sure enough I found a Simplicity pattern from the 80s that uses this order of collar construction. It really does make a very nice collar . I can not recommend it enough. </div>

Next up a liberty lawn shirt . I seem to be the giftee of atypical liberty lawn. This is my second liberty lawn project ,both generous gifts and not a floral in sight ! This particular liberty was a Xmas gift from my husband. It`s funny because he bought this after a Xmas work party in Melbourne . He told his colleagues he was off to The Fabric Store after lunch to buy me a chrissie present. They were apparently horrified that he was making work for me ! On the other hand my sewing group friends were very impressed that he did this off his own bat and said he is a keeper ! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The pattern is called Matt Madison and consists of diamonds with little scenes of bare branched trees and lakes etc . Very wintery fabric with its grey and olive based tones . Unlike my first Liberty Lawn project I didn`t take years to decide what pattern to make and sew it up. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I knew I wanted to make a shirt ( well that is all the fabric I had anyway ) and since it is an unusual Liberty I wanted to make a variation of a standard shirt pattern. I used Kwik Sew 3620 another OOP pattern. I love the collar and like the addition of the front ties. Another poorly kept secret is how much I love the old Kwik Sew patterns and the way the collar is constructed is so neat . I used my rolled hem foot to mainly successfully finish off the front ties ( use your different sewing machine feet - really ! ) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So there you have it .Two very different but luxury shirts that feel sooo nice to wear but cost a fraction of bought ones . ( PS I actually really like floral Liberty lawn - I would love to get the classic Wiltshire pattern with the berries on it . )</div>
